What is Academic Excellence and

How is it Measured?  2007 / 2008 School Year

During the 2007-2008 school year, Ottawa Hills School District was recognized for a number of academic achievements.

·        Ottawa Hills School District is ranked first in the state in student performance for the 2007-2008 school year.  This ranking is based on the Performance Index (PI), a weighted average that includes the level of achievement of every student on every state test taken at every grade level.  The district’s PI is 109.7 out of a possible 120.   Solon City Schools near Cleveland is second with a PI of 109.1; Wyoming City Schools near Cincinnati is third with 109.0.  In 2006, Ottawa Hills was second in the state behind Solon.  In 2007, we were third behind Wyoming (1st) and Solon (2nd).

·        Ottawa Hills School District is consistently rated “Excellent” by the State of Ohio.  On the Local Report Card, the district met 30 out of 30 indicators of performance.  This year, 67 out of 610 school districts in the state met all 30 indicators.  Ottawa Hills has also achieved a new rating “Excellent with Distinction.”  The “Excellent with Distinction” designation is new to the 2007-2008 Local Report Card to recognize high-performing school districts and buildings.  It is earned when a district or school has earned the “Excellent” rating and has also exceeded value-added progress goals for two consecutive years.   Seventy-four (74) districts have attained this new recognition by demonstrating above expected student growth, or progress, for two consecutive years.

·        Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School was selected as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education in 2001-02, 2002-03, and 2003-04.  It was the first school to be selected three consecutive years.

·        Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School has been named as a School of Distinction by Ohio Department of Education to acknowledge the achievement of students with disabilities. This is the second time the building has received this designation by the State Superintendent of Instruction.

·        More than 95% of graduates pursue a college degree.  Our graduation rate is 100%.

·        The Class of 2008 had three National Merit Finalists and three Commended Students.

·        One hundred percent of sophomores scored at proficient level or above on 2008 Ohio Graduation Test in reading, writing, and social studies.  Ninety-nine percent did so in mathematics, and 93% did so in science.

·        Almost ninety-nine percent (98.5%) of our third graders scored at proficient level or above on the 2008 Ohio Third Grade Reading Achievement Test and therefore met the “Third Grade Guarantee.”

·        Students lead the Northwest Ohio area in results on the 2008 Ohio Third – Eighth Grade Achievement Tests.

·        Ottawa Hills Junior/Senior High School is among the top public high schools in the nation according to Newsweek magazine’s annual listing of “America’s Best High Schools.”  Schools are ranked on the basis of a Challenge Index for each school.  The Challenge Index is a measure of the rigor of the curriculum.  The Newsweek list of over 1300 schools in the U.S. includes only 29 schools in the state of Ohio.  It represents the top 5% of all high schools in the nation.  Ottawa Hills High School qualified for this list each year from 1998 to 2007.

·        One hundred twenty-one Advanced Placement (AP) tests were taken by 57 students in 11 curriculum areas with 90% scoring a 3, 4, or 5 (equivalent of a college level A or B).  Thirteen AP courses are offered.  All AP courses have been approved through a rigorous audit procedure conducted by the College Board.

·        Thirty students were named as AP Scholars for the 2006-2007 school year.  Ten students were Scholars with Distinction; six were Scholars with Honor; and 14 were Scholars.  Almost 18% of the 1.4 million students taking AP tests around the world performed at a sufficiently high level to merit the recognition as an AP Scholar.  This number represents 44% of our students who took AP tests that year and 37% of the graduating Class of 2007.  Results for 2007-2008 have not yet been announced.

·        Of the 67 graduates in the Class of 2008, 28 students were awarded Honors diplomas, and 24 received the Ohio Award of Merit.

·        Members of the Class of 2008 were offered 150 scholarships from 79 universities and other sources valued at $4,204,922.30.

·        On annual exit surveys conducted with graduating seniors, members of the following classes said they would rate their educational experience at Ottawa Hills Schools as an A or B:

Class of 2005 – 94.7%

Class of 2006 – 95.5%

Class of 2007 – 95.9%

Class of 2008 – 86.8%

·        One hundred percent of our teachers are Highly Qualified Teachers.  Two teachers are National Board certified.

The School Board operates under a five-year strategic plan from which goals are selected each year.  Progress is measured through the accomplishment of these goals.  Last year the board increased graduation requirements to include four years of mathematics and four years of science.  They also added a third foreign language, Mandarin Chinese, to the foreign language offerings in the junior/senior high school.
